Welcome to Great Glen Energy Co-op - the highest wind farm in the UK
Who we are
We are a renewable energy co-operative that owns a stake in the Millennium Wind Farm in the hills north of Invergarry and south west of Fort Augustus, in the Scottish Highlands. We were set up because we support the generation of clean, green electricity and we want our communities to directly benefit from the technology that sits in our local area. The Great Glen Energy Co-op is part of a family of co-ops that has been developed by Energy4All, a specialist in co-operatively owned renewable energy, in partnership with Nadara (formerly Falck Renewables), the owners of the Millennium Wind Farm and several other sites across Scotland.
Community ownership
The Great Glen Energy Co-op purchased a stake in the Millennium wind farm on the 4th September 2008 after raising £1,288,270 in community shares. In 2010 the members of the co-op were given the opportunity to purchase a further stake in the additional turbines which had been constructed since 2008. The co-op currently has 668 members each with a shareholding ranging from £250 to £20,000 (the maximum holding in the co-op). All members receive annual interest on their shares in the co-op. Irrespective of shareholding each member has one vote in decisions affecting the co-op.
Location
The wind farm, owned and managed by Millennium Wind Energy Ltd, is located in the hills north of Invergarry and south west of Fort Augustus. There are currently 26 x 2.5MW Nordex turbines on the site. When the wind farm is operating fully its 26 turbines generate enough clean, green electricity to supply around 36,000 average homes and help reduce reliance on existing less environmentally-friendly energy resources.
